Smart and Tasteful Use of Spaces
This two story home has no basement so the utility room is located on the main floor adjacent to and under the staircase. Under the highest part of the stairs is a stacking washer dryer with built in cabinets over top, followed by the hot water tank.
Under the shorter part of the staircase we installed a custom built cabinet with hidden components. A bookshelf pulls out to reveal a 32”
deep dry bar. There are also two letter sized 32” deep filing cabinet drawers and panels that appear to be solid are held in place with magnets which allow them to be removed revealing storage
compartments using every part of the area under the staircase. Using heavy duty full extension drawer slides
allows for plywood cabinet and solid wood face framing construction and full access to drawers and slides.
A custom maple cutting board was built using left over material from the staircase and features knife slots that drop down into the open
space behind the dishwasher. The drawer fronts are solid maple and all drawers use soft close slides that extend all the way out of the cabinet so the entire drawer is accessible without having to dig for hidden items at the back. Installing custom cabinets not only makes the best use of space but also makes those spaces highly functional when designed with the customer needs in mind.
Following the R2000 guidelines for construction we try to minimize or completely remove particle board products from our projects. Our cabinets are typically constructed with “performance core” plywood
and solid wood facings and trim. Performance core plywood has a laminated solid wood exterior and a particle board core to increase stability. This kitchen has solid maple upper shaker style doors with glass inserts to give a contemporary feel and LED under cabinet lighting to showcase the custom tile backsplash.
